The use of manure is quite popular practice in the garden especially in the rural areas. This type of fertilizer for your crops may not be as rich in nutrients like other types and the high levels of manure may burn plants if applied directly. However, if put to good use, manure can provide you with lots of benefits in the garden.
Mostly manure is usually made up of digested grain or grass. Manure has very high contents of organic materials and is thus very rich in nutrients. In addition, it contains lots of ammonia which can be very dangerous to pathogens. This is why it is recommended that the manure be composted before it is applied on the farm. Composting manure has very many benefits. On top of getting rid of the harmful ammonia gas, pathogens and weeds, it add to your soil a variety of nutrients. Through mixing the compost with the soil, you can increase the water holding capacity of the soil thus making it better viable to grow anything. As a result you will have to water your plants less. In addition the manure will increase the aeration of the soil. Manure turns the soil into an excellent medium for growing garden plants when the manure is turned into compost and fed to the plants, it becomes an all-round fertilizer. It may be used as top dressing or just mixed with the soil. In case of heavy manures like those produced by cows have to be mixed with materials that are lighter. A good example of such a material is hay or straw. In addition to this, you can add the usual organic substances namely garden debris, vegetable matter. You can also choose to add small amounts of ash or lime. When planning to compost some manure, it is important that you put into consideration the size of the bin you will utilize. On a large scale this can be done by a sludge company but if the bin is too big, it will fail to provide adequate heat which is important when it comes to the composting process. If the pile is too small however, the manure may not receive adequate air. In this case, it is essential that you turn the pile frequently. Compost manure usually adds a significant amount of organic materials to the soil. With the help of organic manure you get to improve the health of your soil at a lower cost and ensure that your plants remain vigorous and healthy.
